And if the asylum seeker does not wish to participate in the interview?

video installation, in collaboration with Rebecca-Glyn Blanco

An interpreter, with previous experience advising on the production of Greek interviewer training videos, is directing an actor on how to perform the role of the interviewer. We see an inherent link between performativity and the prescribed codes of conduct that aim to ‘objectivise’ the interview, and to reduce people and their subjectivities to actors of the law. The conversation in this work is comprised of a triad – interviewer, interpreter, and the conspicuously absent interviewee. Specific, distinct relationships are produced between each vertice of this triangle, linking each participant along divergent planes. Each is bound by written guidelines which describe how they must ‘act’ in this scenario.
